Stoned in Suburbia
On of the better documentaries I've seen.
A fight for the 'stoners arent crazy their just people' camp.
im not advocating you start smoking pot. But theres no reason for everyone to fear stoners. In canada something like 44% of people over the age of 15 have or do smoke marijuana regularly. They are here all over the place, working in parliament, going to university classes, checking your blood pressure. Lets end the stigma against marijuana users, as best encaptured in 1936's "Reefer Madness!"

I Dont Know how to feel about this...
"Black" Ranger

"Yellow" Ranger

Oh the 90's. Isnt this Racializing their super powers? I mean and then theres the fact that the only other girl ranger (Kimberly) is "Pink Ranger"

I think this is a prime example of how race and gender become visible only when you defy your expected roles. I mean Trini is just a person. It seems kind of redundant to name her after her race. I mean her super power isnt 'being asian'. its karate and wearing a robot suit and fighting hilarious characters. I just find it interesting that the most visible factor of these three characters is their race and gender, not, say, their eye colour, hair colour, special powers etc. I mean, shouldnt Kimberly be the white ranger? or the brown ranger?
But this was the 90's. I just found it a bit hilarious.
Another non-related example is the use of the term "White Slut" to describe a white woman in an interracial relationship. Because she has defied the boundaries of whiteness (pumping out a new generation of whiteies by breading with other whiteies, much in the style of purebred dogs) her sexuality and race become visible. Cant remember the name of the reading i found the idea of "stigma transferrence" but the term was defined by Adina Nack in 2000 in an article called "Damaged Goods" about STD stigma. You can google that. I wouldnt recomend googling "White Slut" though. Feminists are not the only ones who 'examine' that term.

Why Everyone Fails Their New Years Resolution : An Existential Rant/Memento Mori
People are pathetic. We are astronomically tiny in comparison to the universe. Our actions... even our lives... are pretty much pointless. But your reading this saying "how sad! how deluded! I am big and powerful and i make a difference, i accomplish things, im 'going somewhere in life' and im in control of where that somewhere is!"
news. you are wrong.
You are not in control of your life because you are only one small part of millions of tiny tiny parts of one big life; the planet, the universe, the galaxy. The big life just swings and sways and does its buisness okay. And the same way your appendix cant ever hope to be a lung, nor can it hope to help the big 'you' pass an exam... you cant control where you'll be in life, nor can you hope to be anything other than what you are. An appendix is best advised to just admit its kind of pointless and chill there at the end of your digestive tract.

Dr. Oz, for example, lists "aging" as a health ailment, along with addiction. He compares overweight people to animals who "will die prematurely"
What does it mean to "die prematurely". Like everyone gets to live to 95 and if they dont its because they did something wrong? Fact: You are going to die. You can't predict or control when you are going to die. If you are LUCKY you will get to be old. You got some grey hair? I am happy for you. Because that means you've been alive about 40 years which is a good 20-30 years on some people I've known. That doesnt make you better than them. It doesnt mean you've done anything wrong or right. it just means you were luckier than them. And that could all change in an instant.

So the next bit. Society, we feel like its not enough to chill and be happy. we have to be the best at something. We have to be clean and organized and 'healthy' and we compete to make our lives valuable. If you dont feel like your 'in control' then your life becomes invalid. So we pick an arbitrary day in an arbritary measure of an abstract concept we've created ("new years", "the 365 day year", "time") and on that day we vow to change who we are, though we know its impossible. We get so shitfaced we can't keep down out lunch so that we dont have to face our inability 'to change'. And we make these meaningless promises "i will stop smoking, loose 20 lbs, recycle, and BECOME A WORLD FAMOUS AUTHOR!!!" that 90% of us have forgotten a month later.
so what is the point of newyears then? If we cannot change who we are and time is irrelevant, what does 'newyears' accomplish? It seems like a day where we all a bit worse about ourselves, some of us get alcohol poisoning, and we do sexy acts with strangers.
does new years mean something to u?
